SCCOE/Silicon Valley New Teacher BTSA Project

The SCCOE/Silicon Valley New Teacher BTSA Project, a state-funded Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA) Induction Program, is a collaborative among the SCCOE, 30 Santa Clara County school districts, the Santa Cruz New Teacher Project and the University of California, Santa Cruz. Beginning teachers work in collaboration with exemplary full-time release veteran teachers. Veteran teachers serve as mentor/coaches to beginning teachers for a period of two years, during which time beginning teachers will:

  • Learn and apply the California Standards for the Teaching Profession
  • Learn to work skillfully with diverse student populations
  • Become thoughtful, self-reflective practitioners
  • Learn in and expect a culture of teaching that is based on principles of collaboration, openness and community
  • Learn to make data and student performance driven instructional decisions
  • Develop their practice at an accelerated rate
  • Be enthusiastic about and interested in the art and practice of teaching
  • Be motivated to stay in and contribute to the teaching profession

Participating teachers have opportunity to earn their Professional Clear Teaching Credential by successfully completing two years in the Induction Program, which includes the following components:

  • Formative Assessment System (FAS)

Each participating teacher will be paired with a veteran advisor (mentor/coach) who will guide and assist the new teacher through the formative assessment process.
  • Professional Development: Induction Training Series

In addition to the formative assessment, participating teachers will participate in a professional development series which specifically supports their individual learning plan and is linked to the California Standards for the Teaching Profession.
  • Evidence of Knowledge, Growth, and Application

At the end of the two year Induction Program, each participating teacher demonstrates evidence of knowledge, growth and application based on six induction standards.
